Are you a 34-er or a 35-er?
We recently had General Conference. During this, our leaders spoke to us about unity and how important it is for us to unify in Christ even when the country is dividing and our political opinions differ. I have Facebook set so uplifting pages I follow show up first, because Facebook is just not a happy place for me right now. I made a huge mistake and clicked on comments where members of the LDS Church, just a few days after being told to unify, were arguing over which party members of the Church should be. The Church doesn't tell us who or which party to vote for, which I'm grateful. This was difficult for me to deal with.
With my son, we were reading scriptures for seminary where I came across the following scriptures in Helaman chapter 3. The Nephites were arguing amongst each other. This is what it says:
34 And they were lifted up in apride, even to the persecution of many of their brethren. Now this was a great evil, which did cause the more humble part of the people to suffer great persecutions, and to wade through much affliction.
35 Nevertheless they did afast and bpray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their chumility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the dpurifying and the esanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their fyielding their hearts unto God.
This brought comfort to me. All I could think of are all the people arguing around me. They're 34-ers. I need to strive to be a 35-er. Instead of arguing, name calling, and judging, I should fast and pray for these people. I need to remember to rely on the Lord and trust that He has a plan and it won't fail. This will lead to joy.
So, during this extremely difficult time, as the United States turns on itself, as countries argue, as humans fight a war against a microscopic virus, will be a 34-er or a 35-er?
